Delivering on the European Union’s Nature Restoration Laws
When it comes to action for nature, the European Union's nature restoration law is exciting and ambitious. We LOVE big goals like this, but at Woop Woop for Nature we're also very committed to making them happen.
That's why we're deep diving into the detail of the EU's nature restoration law, so when Australia announces it's brave and ambitious goals soon (yes we're looking at you, Nature Repair Bill), the restoration sector, and Australia more broadly, will be ready to hit the ground running.
So here's our thoughts about how the EU can start to scale to meet some of their targets.
1. Three billion trees to be planted: urgently invest in training the next gen of ecologists and seed collectors, upgrade and automate nurseries, adopt and modify agricultural machinery for large scale soil preparation, planting, watering and monitoring. Adopt and innovate AgTech and build an army of specialists.
2. Integrate agricultural systems with high biodiversity features: land access is a key barrier to all restoration projects. Support farmers with natural capital accounting tools and strengthen the research between natural capital and profitability.
3. Restore drained peatlands, including rewetting: careful planning is essential, but how can EU planning procedures help to fast track action?
4. Social revolution - when the policy was announced, a group of farmers clashed with riot police. We know lots of wonderful farmers already doing wonderful things for nature, but to achieve the EU's ambitious goals we will need a social revolution.
